Compression Socks for Shin Splints

Even though I’ve been running for 3 years now, I’ve started experiencing pain in my shins. A friend of mine recommended getting compression socks. They are supposed to offer support and help with circulation.

I went to Sports Authority to try a pair on and found them to be pretty uncomfortable. Just trying them on my body temperature went up to the point I started sweating. I decided against the socks but they also had compression sleeves. They just went over the calf. I thought those might be better since I would still be wearing breathable socks. Sadly, they didn’t have any in my size.

I went online and found a pair for $38 at Zappos.com. Plus I get free overnight shipping with Zappos so there is little to no inconvenience to shopping online. I ordered them Saturday night. They shipped Sunday morning and arrived on Monday!! I was beyond impressed.

I tried them on Tuesday for my short run day.

They are unisex so they were longer than I thought they would be but I went with it. Not the cutest look :)

I struggled to make it to mile 1. I was dying. The sweat was pouring off me. I felt like my legs were suffocating so I stopped and made an adjustment

It definitely helped but it was too late – my energy was gone.

I had planned on doing a long run today. I started with the sleeve pulled up to allow for some ventilation. Sadly, I didn’t make it a mile before I stopped to take them off. I clearly just exert too much heat from my legs.

I will say that I had no pain in my shins when I was running with them on, so if you don’t overheat easily – I would recommend giving them a try if you get shin splints regularly.

compression socks are a savior for me after long runs…but i usually wear them after my long run or after a big race for expedited recovery.

  2. First off, I love the look! You may want to look into taping for shin splints – I’ve done it and it wouldn’t be as hot. Oh, and ice like a mother!
